Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.
In one demonic frenzy, November 9-10, 1938, men so full of evil they no longer qualified as human committed multiplied thousands of crimes against humanity.
Tens of thousands of innocent people who had been forced to identify themselves as Jews with yellow patches on their clothes were torn from their homes and families and trucked to almost certain death. Tens of thousands of synagogues, homes, and businesses slapped with the word “Juden” were destroyed in Nazi Germany and parts of Austria.
Jerry and I have read Bodie Thoene’s award-winning Zion Covenant series of novels in which she gives a sobering, unforgettable description of that night.
We don’t know whether our families of origin are Jewish or not. It doesn’t matter. We are a son and daughter of Abraham by faith, grafted by God’s grace into His family. Galatians 3:29 says, “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.” We have been adopted into the family of Abraham and are heirs to all the promises of the Abrahamic covenant. In Christ, Jew and gentile are one.
If our country continues down the lawless, heartless detour it is now on, away from our American commitment to honor what God honors and hate what God hates, Jerry and I are taking our stand now:
If you’re going to require yellow patches, give us two. If you’re going to paint “Juden” on homes, paint it on ours.
Because we are going to stand with God’s people.
Kristallnacht: [A] pogrom or series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938, carried out by SA paramilitary and civilians. German authorities looked on without intervening. The attacks left the streets covered with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues.
At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, as the attackers demolished buildings with sledgehammers. Over 1,000 synagogues were burned (95 in Vienna alone), and over 7,000 Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht
