“There weren’t two Billy Grahams”

Comments at the viewing of Dr. Billy Graham’s body in the Capitol Rotunda, February 28, 2018–floral wreaths from each of the three branches of government were brought in and displayed next to Billy Graham’s coffin:

House Speaker Paul Ryan: “He was not a self-made man. He said, ‘The secret of my work is God. I would be nothing without Him.’ He was a happy instrument in the hand of his Creator.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: “[The book of ] Matthew says to love the Lord with your heart, soul and mind. Billy Graham woke up every day and did just that. He was great not by who he was but by Who[m] he served.”

President Donald Trump: “Billy Graham was an ambassador for Christ. His message was ‘God loves you!'”

Senate Chaplain Barry Black, benediction: “Billy Graham’s scandal-free life of integrity was characterized by conduct that was above reproach. . .” He closed, “In the name of Billy Graham’s Savior and closest friend, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Comments by Billy Graham’s grown children at his funeral March 2, 2018 at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina:

Gigi Graham: I want to be called the one that Daddy loved the longest. [She read aloud a poem written by her mother Ruth at the age of 13, describing the man she wanted to marry–as if she already knew Billy.]

Evangelist Anne Graham Lotz: “February 21, 2018 [the day her father went to heaven] is the day Jews observe the death of Moses, the Great Liberator. Like Moses my father brought people out of bondage to the edge of the Promised Land. Now Joshua (Jesus) is coming to lead us in! This is a shot across the bow. ”

Ruth Graham: “I was divorced, devastated. I was stubborn, wilful, sinful. I married a man [my family warned me against.] Within 24 hours I knew I’d made a terrible mistake. In 5 weeks, I fled. I went home, a failure. What would I say to Daddy, to Mother? As I rounded the last bend, my father was standing in the driveway. He wrapped his arms around me and said, ‘Welcome home.’ He showed me what God is like.”

Ned Graham: “My father was–FAT.  Faithful. Available. Teachable. May we all be like that.”

Franklin Graham, early rebel, now head of the humanitarian ministry Samaritan’s Purse: “The Billy Graham the world saw on television, in the big stadiums, was the same Billy Graham that we saw at home. There weren’t two Billy Grahams. He loved his family. He stood by us. He comforted us.”
