Shout for joy, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away His judgments against you, He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; You will fear disaster no more. In that day it will be said to Jerusalem: “Do not be afraid, O Zion; do not let your hands fall limp. The LORD your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” Zephaniah 3:14-17
On May 14, 1948, Israel became a state. Exactly 70 years later, on May 14, 2018, the United States recognized Jerusalem as the rightful capital of that nation according to Scripture by moving our Embassy there.
Jerusalem, also called Zion and the City of David, is inextricably interwoven with Israel in Scripture.
–Jerusalem is the city from which the king ruled over the nation, where God appointed Solomon to build the temple and the place where He has chosen to “put his name”:
“In this house [temple] and in Jerusalem which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever” 2 Chronicles 33:7. See also I Kings 11:36; 2 Kings 23:27; Nehemiah 1:8-9; Deut. 12:20-21; I Kings 14:21; 2 Chronicles 12:13.
“Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city in all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, that my name might be there, and I chose no man as prince over my people Israel; but I have chosen Jerusalem that my name may be there and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.” I Chronicles 6:5-6 NKJV
“For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His dwelling place:
‘“This is My resting place forever;
Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
I will abundantly bless her provision;
I will satisfy her poor with bread.
I will also clothe her priests with salvation,
And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.'” Psalm 132:13-16 NKJV
“Blessed be the Lord out of Zion,
Who dwells in Jerusalem!
Praise the Lord!” Psalm 135:21 NKJV“In [Jeru]Salem also is His tabernacle, and His dwelling place in Zion.” Psalm 76:2 NKJV
–The LORD loves Jerusalem: “[He] chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved Psalm 78:68 NKJV.
“The Lord loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of God! Selah” Psalm 87:2-3
Restoring Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is a fulfillment of very specific prophecies in many books of the Bible by many authors over a period of 4,000 years
“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;
They shall never hold their peace day or night.
You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent,
And give Him no rest till He establishes
And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Isaiah 62:6-7
“Now it shall come to pass in the latter days
That the mountain of the Lord’s house
Shall be established on the top of the mountains,
And shall be exalted above the hills;
And peoples shall flow to it.
Many nations shall come and say,
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
He will teach us His ways,
And we shall walk in His paths.”
For out of Zion the law shall go forth,
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between many peoples,
And rebuke strong nations afar off;
They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
Neither shall they learn war anymore.”
Isaiah 2:2-4 NKJV and Micah 4:1-3 NKJV
“From the heart of Jerusalem
the Lord roars like a lion,
shaking the earth and sky.
But the Lord is a fortress,
a place of safety
for his people Israel.
I am the Lord your God.
And you will know I live on Zion,
my sacred hill,
because Jerusalem will be sacred,
untouched by foreign troops.” Joel 3:16-17 CEV
“In that day,” says the Lord,
“I will assemble the lame,
I will gather the outcast
And those whom I have afflicted;
I will make the lame a remnant,
And the outcast a strong nation;
So the Lord will reign over them in Mount ZionFrom now on, even forever.” Micah 4:6-7 NKJV
‘For I will restore health to you
And heal you of your wounds,’ says the Lord,
‘Because they called you an outcast saying:
“This is Zion; no one seeks her.” ’
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents,
And have mercy on his dwelling places;
The city shall be built upon its own mound,
And the palace shall remain according to its own plan.
Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry;
I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
Their children also shall be as before,
And their congregation shall be established before Me;
And I will punish all who oppress them.
Their nobles shall be from among them,
And their governor shall come from their midst;
Then I will cause him to draw near,
And he shall approach Me;
For who is this who pledged his heart to approach Me?’ says the Lord.
‘You shall be My people, and I will be your God.’” Jeremiah 30:17-22 NKJV
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that the city shall be built for the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. The surveyor’s line shall again extend straight forward over the hill Gareb; then it shall turn toward Goath. And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be holy to the Lord. It shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore forever.” Jeremiah 31:38-40 NKJV
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
In the city of our God,
In His holy mountain.
Beautiful in elevation,
The joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north,
The city of the great King.
God is in her palaces;
He is known as her refuge…
As we have heard,
So we have seen
In the city of the Lord of hosts,
In the city of our God:
God will establish it forever. Selah
We have thought, O God, on Your lovingkindness,
In the midst of Your temple.
According to Your name, O God,
So is Your praise to the ends of the earth;
Your right hand is full of righteousness.
Let Mount Zion rejoice,
Let the daughters of Judah be glad,
Because of Your judgments.
Walk about Zion,
And go all around her.
Count her towers;
Mark well her bulwarks;
Consider her palaces;
That you may tell it to the generation following.
For this is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will be our guide
Even to death.” Psalm 48:1-3, 8-14 NKJV
In the last days, the LORD himself will rule and reign here, through His divine Son who, in his humanity, is in the royal line of King David Romans 1:1-4 NKJV: “The LORD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and His glory will be before His elders” Isaiah 24:23 NKJV.
His Son Jesus will be her cornerstone, her foundation: “Therefore the Lord GOD said: ‘Look, I have laid a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; the one who believes will be unshakable.” Isaiah 28:16 Christian Standard Bible
Repeated in New Testament: “Therefore it is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen precious cornerstone; and the one believing on Him, shall not be put to shame.” I Peter 2:6 Berean Literal Bible
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey…Zechariah 9:9 NASB
When Messiah Jesus rode through the gates of Jerusalem on 29 March, 33 AD (Daniel 9: 25-26) the King coming to assume His rightful throne in the Kingdom, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, His people did not recognize Him or “the time of their visitation.”
Overlooking the city, he cried out, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not have it! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ” Matthew 23:37-39 and Luke 13:34-35 NKJV.
But when that time comes, when He comes again, “every eye will see him, even they who pierced him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him.” (Rev. 1:7) “They will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.” (Zech. 12:10)
Jews and gentiles alike will welcome Him with a cry of exultation,”BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!”
“…And He will speak peace to the nations; and His dominion will be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Blessed be the Lord out of Zion, Who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the LORD!” Zechariah 9:10 NASB
“At that time Jerusalem shall be called ‘The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem” Jeremiah 3:17. “And all Israel shall be saved.” (Romans 11:26)
